Local Red Cross to host volunteer orientations

Feb 26

To help accommodate the increased interest in volunteering with the American Red Cross, the local chapter is hosting three free orientations for prospective volunteers.

The class gives an overview of the American Red Cross and explains the process to volunteer as well as allows time to complete the application to volunteer.  Nanci Conley, director of public support, and Judy DelSignore, a Red Cross volunteer instructor, will lead the orientations from 6-8 p.m. at three locations as follows:

Thursday, March 4, at the Myrtle Beach Mall (across from Bath & Body)

Wednesday, March 10, at the Georgetown Service Center, 537 Lafayette Circle in Georgetown

Thursday, March 18, at the Red Cross Chapter, 2795 Pampas Dr., Myrtle Beach

Pre-registration is required for this free orientation and interested volunteers need only attend one of the sessions. Anyone interested in learning more about volunteering with the Red Cross can call 477-0020 in Horry County or 546-5422 in Georgetown County and add their name and phone number to the list to attend.

THE 16TH ANNUAL HORRY COUNTY MUSEUM QUILT GALA

Feb 26

The Horry County Museum Quilt Gala has become a fixture on the Grand
Strand. Started in 1994, the first Gala was held on the lawn of the
Horry County Courthouse. The idea quickly caught on. Over the years
the Gala has continued to grow. The Gala is held at the Ocean Lakes
Family Campground Recreation Center, Hwy. 17 South, in Myrtle Beach, SC.
A beautiful assortment of quilts will be displayed at the gala. They
represent a variety of techniques and skill levels. The categories at
this year’s Gala are large quilt, medium quilt, small quilt, wearables,
and a challenge. The large, medium, and small are divided by size. The
wearables are hand made garments sewn using a variety of quilting
techniques. The challenge category is based on preset restrictions. A
challenge always limits the quilter to certain size limitations and can
place other restrictions on the quilter such as; colors, fabrics, or
themes. The 2010 Challenge theme is “Initial This”. Each challenge
quilt should interpret initials with quilting personality and
imagination. Winners of each category will receive a ribbon. The blue
ribbon winners from each category are displayed in the Museum during the
month of March.
In addition to displaying quilts the Gala also hosts demonstrators,
speakers, and a featured quilter. This year there will be a
presentation by the Horry County Museum director about the care and
preservation of Grandma’s Quilt. This presentation will give
participants an in-depth look at how to properly take care of heirloom
quilts and other textiles important to the family. Participants will
also get the opportunity to hear, Maxi Lardiere, this years featured
quilter tell how she got started in the quilting hobby and show some of
her work. Again this year we will have a bed turning with a narrated
explanation of the history behind some antique quilts. Several
demonstrators will be present giving scheduled talks of the art and
style of quilting. Michelle Robinett will be discussing “Tiny
Treasures”, a tribute to small and miniature quilts. Sharon Gause will
acquaint folks with quilting knowledge “Redwork Revisited”, a pattern
and style of quilting with red thread. Along with the beautiful quilts,
local and regional vendors will be on hand to support, consult, and aid
the quilter with various quilting merchandise.
The Museum is grateful to have the support of local quilt
guilds for many years to aid in the management, set-up, and break down
of the Gala. There is a tremendous amount of work that goes into
setting up, cataloging quilts, manning the raffles and door prizes, and
breaking down the Gala. The Museum is fortunate to have the continued
support of local quilting groups and individuals that allow us to
maintain growth.
The 16th annual Quilt Gala will be held Saturday February 27th from 10 -
4 and Sunday February 28th from 1-4pm. The admission is $5.00 per
person; students with ID and children under 12 are free.
